This recipe may qualify as one of the most classic Swedish recipes. A toast skagen is usually served as a starter, but due to its popularity and deliciousness, you can often times find it as both a starter and a main course at restaurants. If you decide to make it in your own kitchen, you can choose to have it as a starter, a luxury weekend lunch or a lighter dinner. To make it even tastier, serve it with a glass of prosecco or champagne.
That being said, there are many ways in which you can serve this dish. As long as you like shrimp, a toast skagen will not disappoint you. So, what exactly is a toast skagen? Basically, it is a shrimp and mayonnaise mixture that is served on a butter fried toast topped with dill and lemon. These flavors combined will make it an appetizing experience, one in which you won’t forget. Toast skagen is not something complicated to make; however, it is important to not cheat the steps in order to reach a level of perfection. Therefore, make sure you have time to make it right and I will guarantee that it will not only meet your expectations, but exceed them.
The recipe that you will find below is my brother’s recipe that he has generated over time, by taking one recipe and slowly and gradually changing it into the perfect recipe over the years. Growing up, it was always my brother making this dish as he always manages to make it into perfection. My family and I will often serve toast skagen as a starter for special occasions such as when we are making a three-course dinner. There are also times when we will make this dish for a weekend brunch or a birthday lunch. Again, served with a cold glass of champagne, there is no doubt that this dish will become your new favorite thing to devour.
So, what will you need to make a toast skagen?
Ingredients:
200 g shrimp with shells/ 100 g shrimp without shells
½ red onion
1 bunch of dill
1 tbsp lemon juice
5-6 drops tabasco
1 tsp grated horseradish
1/3 cup mayonnaise
Bread of your choice
Butter
For garnishing:
Lemon wedges
Dill
Now that we have identified the ingredients for a toast skagen, below are the simple steps to make it:
1. If your shrimps are with shells, peel the shrimps and place in a bowl.
2. Cut off the edges of the bread. Fry the bread in a pan with a generous amount of butter. It is important to only fry one side of the bread, once the bread acquires a nice golden color on that side, place the bread on a plate on the side and clean the pan. Then, add another generous amount of butter into the pan and fry the bread on the other side. Butter may not be healthy, but it will for sure make the bread tastier;)
3.Now, add mayonnaise and lemon juice to the bowl containing the shrimp and mix it well.
4. Chop the red onion and dill (leave a little and use for garnishing at the end). Then, add tabasco, horseradish, red onion and dill into the bowl and mix it well.
5. Cut the lemon into wedges.
6. Place the shrimp mixture onto the butter fried toast, then garnish it with a lemon wedge and some dill.
Serve immediately and enjoy.
